How much do lessons cost?

Lesson price depends on the location and number of students. Note that the discount for multiple students applies only when the lessons occur consecutively (one after the other, without a time gap). Prices are for 30-minute lessons.

Is there any age limit for prospective students?

There is no upper age limit for piano students; however for adult students I request that at least one other person (of any age) be present in the home when lessons take place. In general, I teach children who are of kindergarten age and older, however exceptions may be made for particularly mature children (as determined by me) who are learning to read and who can count and recognize written numbers up to 20. An adult must be present in the home during piano lessons for all children under the age of 18.

I don't have a piano. What are my options?

Although not ideal, an electric keyboard is sufficient for most beginner students. Used keyboards may often be purchased at a greatly reduced price compared to new. Early beginners need at least a 61-key keyboard with full-size keys, preferably one that is touch-sensitive. Late beginner students need a full-size keyboard with touch-sensitive keys, preferably weighted ones. They will also need occasional access to a piano with foot pedals. If students continue to an intermediate level, they will need to practice on a piano.

When do I pay you?

Payment for the previous month is due by the second week of the next month. There are no late fees at this time, however lessons will be suspended for students with balances that are overdue by four weeks or more until the balance is paid in full. Please speak with me if you have any payment-related concerns.

What books do you use?

For the core curriculum of young beginners, I use the following books from Alfred's Basic Piano Library:

• Recital Book
• Theory Book
• Technic Book

You will need copies of the Lesson Book, Recital Book, and Technic Book. I will provide theory worksheets as needed. I may also use supplemental books as needed.

For beginners starting later in childhood, we may use the accelerated Alfred's Basic Piano Library system. Begniners above the age of 15 (or above the age of 12 upon request) will use Alfred's Basic Adult All-In-One Course.

You may choose whether to purchase necessary books yourself, or I can purchase them for you and you can repay me at the next piano lesson.

Do I need any other materials?

In addition to piano books, you will need a metronome. These may be purchased online or in most music stores. If you are using an electric piano or keyboard, it probably has a metronome built in. There are also a number of free metronome apps that may be downloaded on your smartphone. Depending on student needs, it may also be necessary to purchase flash cards to help with sight reading.

What if I need to cancel a lesson?

Please contact me at least 24 hours in advance where possible, except in cases of emergency or illness. I will not charge a cancellation fee until two hours prior to the scheduled lesson time unless last-minute cancellations become a recurring issue (more than three day-of cancellations). Cancellation fees are equal to one half of the lesson fee. For families with multiple students, this fee is per student.

How do I prepare myself (or my child) for piano lessons?

In order to maximize the effectiveness of lesson time, please make sure the books, assignment binder, and any other materials are ready and near the piano five minutes prior to the start of the lesson. It is also very important that students' fingernails are kept trimmed. This will allow students to develop proper form when playing the piano.

Do you offer any incentives for children to practice?

If your child practices at least 20 minutes a day (10 minutes for young beginners) for five days a week, she or he will be given a small treat during their lesson. Please notify me of any food allergies your child may have, or whether you would prefer your child be given non-food items (stickers, etc.).

How do I (or my child) keep track of assignments?

Students will be given an assignment sheet each lesson detailing what is to be practiced during the week. These will be kept in a 3-ring binder which I will provide. For children, these assignment sheets include an area in which to log your child's practice minutes each day.
